Kenyan automaker Roam announced Monday the launch of the Roam Move, an electric shuttle bus designed and built entirely in Kenya.
The zero-emissions Roam Move represents the first locally manufactured electric bus in Kenya. The launch builds on Roam’s efforts to develop eco-friendly public transportation powered by electricity, said company spokesperson Dennis Wakaba.
“We are thrilled to introduce the Roam Move, Kenya’s very own electric shuttle bus,” Wakaba said. “This achievement aligns perfectly with our vision of fostering sustainable transportation solutions that positively impact our environment and communities.”
With a capacity to carry 51 passengers, the shuttle bus features spacious, ergonomic seating and wide aisles to enhance the rider experience, Wakaba said. Cutting-edge safety features include collision avoidance systems and advanced driver assistance.
Equipped with a 170 kWh battery, the Roam Move can travel up to 200 km on a single charge – enough to handle a full day’s work, according to Wakaba. The bus battery can be fully recharged in under two hours.

Wakaba said that by avoiding costly maintenance and having fewer moving parts than conventional buses, the electric shuttle cuts operating costs approximately in half – to around KES 35 per km.
The locally built Roam Move contrasts with the company’s Roam Rapid model designed for Bus Rapid Transit systems. Wakaba called the new shuttle bus a fusion of innovation, technology and eco-consciousness.
“This vehicle is poised to revolutionize public transportation by providing a zero-emission solution that addresses air quality challenges, reduces reliance on imported fossil fuels, and promotes domestic renewable energy,” he said.
The Roam Move will begin official operations in late October.
Wakaba said the launch highlights Roam’s commitment to supporting local manufacturing while advancing Kenya’s sustainability goals. It also demonstrates the potential of the country’s manufacturing industry, he added.
