Kenyan businesses and state agencies seeking to get their Twitter accounts verified will now have to pay a monthly fee of Ksh 132,520. This is according to a statement released by the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) on March 29, 2023. The statement indicates that the payment is aimed at covering the costs of the verification process, which includes manual review of account details, authentication of the owner and identity verification.

The Twitter verification process involves providing proof of identity, including official government identification, business registration details, and a phone number. Once the verification process is complete, a blue badge appears next to the user’s name on Twitter, indicating that the account is verified. The badge is intended to help users identify legitimate accounts and minimize the spread of fake news and misinformation.

The move has been met with mixed reactions, with some Kenyan business owners and social media influencers expressing concern about the high cost of the monthly fee. However, the CAK has defended the move, saying that it will help to promote transparency and accountability in online communication. The agency also stated that the fee will only apply to businesses and state agencies, and not to individual users.

This move by the CAK is part of a broader effort by the Kenyan government to regulate online communication and curb the spread of fake news and misinformation. The government has previously taken measures such as passing laws to regulate social media use and creating a task force to monitor and report on online content.
