Safaricom will automatically deduct Bonga Points from customers who don’t pay their Okoa Jahazis. The telco wants to use this to reduce the millions of shilling worth of rising debts owed by Bonga Point.
With its implementation, the company will be in a position to collect past-due airtimes. it was noted that some clients have more than five cell lines with unpaid airtime.
Safaricom imposes a 10 percent advance fee on okoa Jahazi. All Safaricom prepay users are eligible, and client limits increase each time they purchase airtime.

With client limitations increasing each time they purchase airtime, it is accessible to all Safaricom prepay users. Previously, Safaricom chose to impose an expiry date on the Bonga points due to its users, a decision that was reversed indefinitely in the middle of implementation.
Unclaimed Bonga points would have automatically expired as a result of the Bonga points’ viability being suspended.

The decision to have loyalty points expire was explained by Safaricom as a business decision to encourage redemption.
Despite the company expanding the options for redemption to include the purchase of shares at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), airtime, phones, and even plane tickets, the value of outstanding or unredeemed points has been rising over the years, reaching Ksh4.5 billion in March 2022 from Ksh3billion in 2015.
Over the last seven years, the outstanding value of unclaimed points has doubled, from Ksh2.2 billion in 2015 to Ksh4.5 billion this year.
The loyalty programme, launched in January 2007, awards customers one Bonga point for every Ksh10 spent on the Safaricom network on the phone, mobile data, and SMS and for every Ksh100 spent on the network for M-Pesa transactions.
The more you use your Safaricom line, the more points you get and the bigger the rewards. Bonga points can be redeemed at any Safaricom Retail Center countrywide.
