Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has been selected by the African Union (AU) to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), to Nigeria for this month’s polls due on February 25, 2023.

The appointment marks his second assignment by the African Union since leaving office in September 2022.

Soon after his exit, he was appointed to the African Union’s troika of negotiators in the dispute between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front alongside former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former South African Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

He had also previously been selected to lead East Africa Community (EAC) region peace talks by his successor, President William Ruto.

The African Union said the team will give an accurate and objective assessment of the electoral process, including the degree to which the conduct of the polls follows regional, continental, and international standards for democratic elections.

Prior to the election, the AUEOM will engage with a variety of stakeholders and monitor the voting process and later provide its initial announcement on February 27,

Nigeria will hold its sixth election after the civilian rule was restored in 1999. The Nigerian elections will take place a few months before the 30th anniversary of the 1993 presidential elections, which were later declared invalid but were largely regarded as the “freest and fairest” in the country’s history.
