The government is working on renaming the National Health Insurance Fund, (NHIF) according to Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha’s statement on Thursday, February 2, 2023.

The CS announced that the insurance fund would soon change its name to the National Social Health Insurance Fund (NSHIF) during a press conference held at the Safari Park Hotel.

The announcement was made by the CS while she was in Nairobi for the first Cancer Summit.

“For us to drive this universal healthcare, we have to bring everybody on board. That is why we already have a team working and in the next few months, we are going to roll out NSHIF.”

“The NSHIF is going to leave no one behind. Every Kenyan is going to have access to healthcare,” Nakhumicha said.

Nakhumicha added that the change from the National Hospital Insurance Fund to the National Health Insurance Fund was only another chapter in the fund’s development.

The CS also disclosed that the government will hire 90,000 community healthcare professionals as part of improving Universal Healthcare. The NHIF’s name change coincides with President William Ruto’s desire to change the insurance fund’s payout system.

The National Hospital Insurance Fund is a Kenyan government state corporation with a mandate to provide health insurance to Kenyans. The core business and mandate for NHIF is to provide accessible, affordable, sustainable, and quality health insurance for all Kenyan citizens
