MPs Halt Induction Retreat Over CDF Delays

The weeklong induction seminar for Members of Parliament (MPs) that kicked off in Mombasa on January 23 was halted following protests by a section of MPs.

The legislators stormed out of the venue accusing the National Government of Intentionally delaying the disbursement of the money.

Yatta MP Robert Ngui, who led the dissenting members, accused Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u of being skeptical of the matter, despite the sensitivity it carries.

He argued that schools had been reopened, and children needed to be facilitated to get back to school through bursaries as a matter of priority compared to the retreat.

“The CS has been promising us KSh2 billion a week for the last two months. Nothing has come. We cannot sit in this five-star hotel while our children are not in school because they do not have bursary,”

In a video that has since gone viral, the legislators can be heard chanting the “bado mapambano” song that is synonymous with demonstrations in Kenya.

Kasarani MP and Sportpesa Chief Executive Officer Ronald Karauri echoed the move to cancel the retreat, saying it was less important at this time.

“I fully support the decision to cancel the Mombasa retreat for MPs until CDF funds for bursaries are disbursed. It is important that we prioritize the education of our school children over luxury retreats for members and resources allocated to the areas that need it the most,” said Karauri.
