The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has appointed Dr. Adano Wario as its Acting Director-General after the expiry of the tenure of his predecessor, Wang’ombe Kariuki.

CAK heaped praise on the departing Kariuki, whose second five-year term has come to an end, for his contribution to overseeing the transition of the body from the Ministry of Finance to a semi-autonomous organ.

“We owe immense gratitude to Mr. Kariuki, who departs after overseeing the CAK’s transformation from a Department within the Ministry of Finance to a semi-autonomous institution that is held in high regard by stakeholders, nationally, regionally and internationally,” said CAK in a statement.

CAK also attributed the protection of consumers by corporates to Kariuki, who helped in formulating regulations to enhance transparency and fair competition.

“His key achievements include developing a robust competition regulatory regime, enhancing financial inclusion by extinguishing exclusive mobile money agent agreements, increasing-price transparency in mobile money transactions, and reducing USSD charges by 90%,” said the statement.

“Mr. Kariuki contributed to improving Kenya’s investment climate by developing regulations that  created transparency and predictability in the competition enforcement process.”

The newly appointed Wario will lead the authority in an acting capacity until such time when the board of directors appoints him in a substantive capacity after approval by parliament.

Wario was the Director of planning, research, and quality assurance at CAK at the time of his appointment to the new role.
