The NSE Bull Run: Sustainable Re-rating or Speculative Euphoria?

Kenya’s equity market has recorded a strong rally in 2026, raising questions about whether rising share prices reflect improving corporate fundamentals or increasing investor appetite for equities. The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) All-Share Index (NASI) rose by 9.6% in Q3’2026 to 245.60 points, from 224.15 points in Q2’2026, while market capitalization increased by 48.0% year-on-year to Kshs 4.12 tn in September 2026. The performance signals renewed investor interest in listed equities, but the pace of appreciation raises questions about whether valuations remain supported by earnings growth, dividends and future cash flows.

A fundamental re-rating occurs when investors become willing to pay higher prices for a company because of improved earnings prospects, stronger balance sheets, sustainable dividends or lower perceived risk. Kenya’s easing monetary policy has also supported the investment case for equities, as lower interest rates can make shares more attractive relative to fixed-income investments. The NASI’s current price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 7.3x and average market dividend yield of 6.1% provide additional context for the rally, suggesting that equities continue to offer relatively attractive valuations and income potential. However, these market-wide indicators may mask significant differences across individual counters, making company-level earnings growth, dividend sustainability and cash-flow generation critical in determining whether current share prices are justified.

Conversely, speculative activity becomes a concern when share prices rise primarily on expectations of further price increases rather than improvements in underlying business performance. Olympia Capital Holdings provides a timely case study. On 28 October 2026, its share price surged by 198.4% to Kshs 21.55, from Kshs 7.22 at the previous close, after reaching an intraday high of Kshs 150.00. The rally followed news that investor Ndindi Nyoro had acquired a 9.76% stake and intended to increase his holding to 25% to facilitate a potential transformation of the company into an investment holding business. Notably, Olympia reported an 18.1% decline in half-year net profit, despite a 4.5% increase in revenue to Kshs 278.7 mn. This divergence raises questions about whether investors were responding to the company’s current financial performance or expectations of a future transformation. Although the proposed strategy could unlock value if successfully implemented, its outcome will depend on execution, capital allocation and the ability to generate sustainable earnings.

Market activity provides further context. Equity turnover declined by 72.4% quarter-on-quarter to USD 560.6 mn in Q3’2026, from USD 2,044.3 mn in Q2’2026. This was partly attributable to an 866.7% increase in foreign net selling, with the net selling position widening to USD 89.9 mn from USD 9.3 mn in the previous quarter. Despite the moderation in turnover and increased foreign selling, market capitalisation continued to rise, suggesting that valuation gains persisted even as trading activity normalised. However, these figures alone cannot establish whether investors were acting on fundamentals or speculation.

Ultimately, determining whether the NSE rally is sustainable requires comparing share-price appreciation with earnings growth, P/E multiples, dividend yields and cash-flow generation. Investors should distinguish between companies whose valuations are supported by stronger business performance and those whose prices may have moved ahead of their fundamentals. While the market’s relatively low P/E ratio and attractive dividend yield provide a basis for continued investor interest, these aggregate measures do not guarantee that every counter is undervalued. The sustainability of the bull run will depend on whether corporate earnings and dividends can justify current valuations as market conditions evolve.
