Absa Asset Management Expands Its Fund Offering
Absa asset management is expanding its presence in Kenya’s investment market after the Capital Markets Authority approved two new multi-asset special-fund sub-funds under the existing Absa Unit Trust Funds. The regulator approved the Absa Global Multi-Asset Special Fund (USD) and Absa Global Multi-Asset Special Fund (Kshs) in July 2026. The approval gives investors additional options for accessing diversified investment strategies through a regulated collective investment structure.
New KES and USD Funds Broaden Investor Choice
The two new products expand Absa’s existing unit-trust platform beyond conventional savings and fixed-income options. The KES-denominated fund gives local investors access to a multi-asset strategy without taking direct currency exposure, while the USD fund provides an option for investors holding dollar-denominated wealth or seeking greater exposure to international assets. Absa Asset Management already operates a range of investment products, with its investment philosophy focused on value growth, income generation and managing risk within defined tolerance levels.
Multi-Asset Funds Gain Ground in Kenya
The timing of the expansion reflects a broader shift in Kenya’s collective investment market. Unit-trust assets under management reached approximately Kshs 851.7 bn in March 2026, while special funds have also gained a larger share of the market. Special funds accounted for Kshs 203.5 bn, equivalent to 23.9% of collective investment scheme assets at the end of March. This growth indicates increasing investor demand for strategies that can diversify beyond traditional money-market and fixed-income products.
Absa Asset Management Targets Diversification
Multi-asset funds can give investors exposure to several asset classes within a single professionally managed portfolio. Depending on the fund mandate, managers can adjust allocations between instruments such as fixed income, equities and other approved investments as market conditions change. This flexibility can become particularly valuable when interest rates, equity valuations and currency conditions move in different directions. For Absa asset management, the new products therefore create an opportunity to compete for investors seeking diversification rather than relying exclusively on traditional deposit products or single-asset funds.
Banking Competition Moves Beyond Deposits
The expansion also highlights the growing convergence between commercial banking and wealth management. Banks increasingly compete not only for deposits and lending relationships but also for customers’ broader investment portfolios. Asset-management products allow financial institutions to generate management and distribution fees while strengthening relationships with investors. For Absa, expanding its unit-trust range provides another channel through which the Group can participate in the growing pool of household, institutional and high-net-worth investment capital.
USD Funds Support Currency Diversification
The introduction of a USD-denominated multi-asset fund is particularly relevant for investors with dollar-based income, liabilities or investment objectives. A dollar investment vehicle can reduce the need for investors to convert foreign currency into Kenya Shillings before investing. It can also provide an additional avenue for investors seeking international diversification, subject to the specific mandate and permitted investments of the fund. The availability of both KES and USD products therefore allows Absa to address different investor requirements within the same broader unit-trust platform.
Regulatory Approvals Deepen Kenya’s Capital Markets
Absa’s new funds form part of a wider regulatory push to expand Kenya’s collective investment landscape. In July 2026, the CMA approved two new umbrella unit-trust schemes alongside additional sub-funds across existing schemes, including products denominated in KES, USD, Euro and Sterling. The regulator said the approvals aim to deepen capital markets, promote product innovation and expand regulated savings and investment options for Kenyan investors.
Absa Asset Management Faces a More Competitive Market
The expansion nevertheless places Absa in an increasingly competitive market. Other established banks, investment managers and specialist asset managers are also introducing multi-asset, special and alternative investment products. The proliferation of these products is increasing investor choice while forcing fund managers to differentiate through investment performance, fees, accessibility, risk management and product design. For Absa asset management, the challenge will therefore extend beyond obtaining regulatory approval to demonstrating that the new funds can deliver competitive risk-adjusted returns.
Multi-Asset Products Could Reshape Investor Portfolios
The expansion of Absa’s unit-trust offering signals a broader evolution in Kenya’s savings and investment market. As investors become more sophisticated and seek alternatives to conventional deposits and money-market products, banks and fund managers are responding with increasingly specialised investment vehicles. Absa’s new KES and USD multi-asset funds position the Group to capture part of this growing demand while contributing to the diversification of Kenya’s capital markets. The development also reinforces the growing importance of asset management as a source of fee-based income and a strategic component of modern banking.
