Kenya Podcasters Set To Benefit From Spotify’s Million Investment

Music streaming platform Spotify has announced a new initiative dubbed the Africa Podcast Fund, aimed at allowing Kenyan podcasters to amplify their stories.

Through financial scholarships, workshops, and networking opportunities, the fund seeks to advance the professional endeavors of these podcasters.

Selected podcasters from South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana, African nations with the highest podcast listenerships, are illegible to apply for the Africa Podcast Fund.

The grant also covers a Cameroonian podcast with a sizable following both in France and Francophone African nations like Cote d’Ivoire. Given the diversity of the chosen nations, the winning podcasts are produced in a variety of languages, including Pidgin, English, French, Sheng, Ga, and Twi.

The fund will be managed by Africa Podfest, a Kenyan-based firm dedicated to motivating and elevating African podcasters by creating a sustainable and inclusive podcasting industry across Africa.

Melissa Mbugua, CO-Director, of Africa Podfest, expressed their excitement about the development of podcasting in Africa, particularly because the medium allows underrepresented African voices to tell the story of Africa.

Among the Kenyan podcasts set to benefit from the Million Fund include (The Sandwich Podcast, The Messy In Between, Mantalk.Ke, and Nipee Story Podcast.

Spotify is a proprietary Swedish audio streaming and media services provider founded on 23 April 2006 being also one of the largest music streaming service providers, with over 433 million monthly active users, including 188 million paying subscribers, as of June 2022.
