Kithure Kindiki sworn in as Kenya’s deputy president

Kithure Kindiki was officially sworn in as Kenya’s Deputy President on Friday, during a ceremony held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi. The event commenced at 10 a.m., where Kindiki took two oaths—one affirming his allegiance to the office of Deputy President and the other for the diligent execution of his duties.

Kindiki’s appointment comes on the heels of the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who faced serious allegations, including gross constitutional violations and incitement of ethnic hatred. Gachagua has denied the charges, labeling them as politically motivated.

President William Ruto nominated Kindiki, who previously served as the Interior Minister. Following his nomination, the National Assembly swiftly approved his appointment. Additionally, a High Court ruling lifted an earlier order that had prevented his swearing-in, thus clearing the way for the new Deputy President to assume office.

Born on July 17, 1972, in Tharaka, Meru District, Kindiki brings a wealth of experience to the position, having served as a law professor and a senator from 2013 to 2022 before his appointment as Interior Minister in 2022. His ascension to the Deputy President role marks a historic achievement, as he becomes the first politician from Mount Kenya East to occupy this pivotal position in the Kenyan government.
