The top leadership of the National Assembly convened in Naivasha, Nakuru County, on Sunday for the 2024 National Assembly Leadership Retreat, scheduled to run until Wednesday. This year’s theme, “Re-invigorating Synergy in Leadership for Accelerated Discharge of the Mandate of the National Assembly,” aims to build on last year’s efforts to enhance the legislative agenda.

The program, released by the Office of the National Assembly Speaker, outlines key sessions focused on discussing legislative priorities and fostering collaboration among Assembly leaders. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula emphasized the retreat’s importance in mapping out a strategic direction for managing legislative business in the upcoming Fourth Session, set to commence on November 5 and run through December 12, 2024.

“This retreat offers an opportunity for leadership to develop critical strategies to address challenges faced during the Third Session and to plan for processing bills and other legislative priorities,” Wetang’ula noted. He highlighted that participants expect to achieve significant outcomes, including enhanced oversight by the National Assembly through its committees and solutions to procedural and structural issues affecting its mandate.

In addition to legislative discussions, this year’s retreat will feature a session with the Ministry of Energy, focusing on vital topics concerning energy security and infrastructure. Wetang’ula will also host a National Assembly Speaker’s Round Table with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) to discuss “Drivers of Competitiveness.”

“It’s time for bipartisan cooperation to prioritize essential legislation and foster partnerships that benefit the public. We aim to address challenges such as unemployment, the impacts of the tax regime, and revenue-raising measures that influence the business environment,” the Speaker stated.
