On Monday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a public notice seeking assistance in locating Collins Jumaisi Kalusha, a suspect connected to the notorious Kware murders. The DCI emphasized the urgency of the situation, offering a substantial cash reward for any information leading to Kalusha’s arrest, although the exact amount was not disclosed.
“A significant cash reward will be provided to anyone with credible information leading to the suspect’s arrest. The suspect hails from Shiru Sub-location, Shaviringa Location, Hamisi Sub-county in Vihiga County,” the notice stated, highlighting the seriousness of the case.
Kalusha, who has confessed to the murders of 42 women, escaped police custody on August 20, along with 12 Eritrean detainees who were awaiting repatriation. Initial reports suggested that the escapees had cut through a wire mesh and scaled a perimeter wall. However, further investigations revealed that they exited through the main door of the facility. This discovery has led to the arrest of five police officers suspected of facilitating the escape.
The arrested officers—Corporal Ronald Babo and Constables Evans Kipkirui, Mollent Achieng, Zachary Nyabuto, and Gerald Mutuku—were released on a cash bond of KES 200,000 each on August 22. Magistrate Martha Nanzushi granted bail, citing that the DCI had not provided compelling reasons for a 14-day detention without charge. She noted that while investigations into the escape are ongoing, the conditions for the officers’ release were strict enough to prevent interference.
Under their bail conditions, the officers are required to report to the DCI twice a week. Individuals with information on Kalusha’s whereabouts can report confidentially via the anonymous #FichuaKwaDCI hotline at 0800722203. Additionally, they can contact the police through hotlines 999, 911, and 112, or visit any police station across the country.
