Nancy Kigunzu, famously known as Mathe wa Ngara, has been denied bond by JKIA Magistrate Renee Kitangwa. Meanwhile, her co-accused, David Ochieng and Christopher Odipo, were granted bond of KES 1 million each, with an equivalent surety, allowing them to remain out of custody as they await trial.
Kigunzu, represented by lawyer Sophie Nekesa, faces charges related to narcotics after being arrested during a raid by the Anti-Narcotics Unit and Transnational Organized Crime Unit on August 9. The police seized 18.3 kilograms of cannabis, valued at KES. 6 million, from Georgina Apartments in Juja, Kiambu County, where the three were arrested.
Ochieng initially expressed a willingness to testify against Kigunzu, offering to assist the government with evidence. However, he later withdrew this offer. He had earlier claimed that he was simply working as a taxi driver during the time of the arrest, stating, “I am ready to help the government obtain all the evidence it needs.” Despite his initial stance, Ochieng and Odipo have both pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The three suspects were charged with narcotics trafficking and conspiracy to traffic drugs on August 12. While Ochieng and Odipo maintained their innocence, Kigunzu admitted to trafficking but denied involvement in the conspiracy.
The ruling on their bond, initially scheduled for August 19, was postponed as the pre-bail report had not been finalized. By August 22, the necessary documentation had been provided to both legal teams.
State Prosecutor Allen Mulama strongly opposed Kigunzu’s bond request, citing her previous conviction related to narcotics and an ongoing case from August 2023, in which she faces charges for drug offenses involving KES. 18.3 million.
Kigunzu has 14 days to appeal the bond decision.
