Gatanga Constituency Member of Parliament, Edward Muriu, has launched the highly anticipated Mbugiti Irrigation Project, a major initiative aimed at revolutionizing agriculture in the region.

The project, valued at KES 370 million, was officially handed over to the contractor in a ceremony held yesterday, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for local farmers.

The Mbugiti Irrigation Project is expected to directly benefit approximately 2,500 households across Mbugiti, Karangi, and Kimakia sub-locations. The project is designed to provide a reliable water supply to the region, significantly improving food security and stimulating economic growth in Kariara Ward.

The irrigation system will enable farmers to cultivate their land more effectively, regardless of seasonal rainfall patterns, ensuring a steady supply of crops throughout the year.

Speaking at the launch, MP Edward Muriu emphasized the critical importance of water management in his development agenda. “Water is life, and agriculture is the backbone of our economy. This project is not just about irrigation; it’s about empowering our farmers, enhancing food security, and driving economic growth in Gatanga. I made a promise to my constituents, and today, I am proud to see this project come to fruition,” Muriu stated.

Muriu highlighted his active role in advocating for the Mbugiti Irrigation Project, from mobilizing community support to securing the necessary funding. He praised the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including local leaders, government officials, and the community, in making the project a reality. “This project is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. It’s a collective effort that will change lives,” he added.

The project will be executed under the leadership of Chairman Mr. S.W. Nguchittah, with Engineer Gichane overseeing the technical aspects. The implementation team is expected to ensure the project’s timely completion and its alignment with the community’s needs.

In addition to the Mbugiti Irrigation Project, MP Muriu revealed plans for other water initiatives in Gatanga Constituency, including the Ragia Water Project, Gatura Karagia, and the Gatuiku Community Irrigation Project. “We are committed to addressing the water challenges in our constituency. These projects are part of a broader strategy to ensure that every household has access to reliable water sources,” he said.
