Newly appointed Cooperatives and Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya has issued a stern warning to the government, threatening to resign if his advice is disregarded.
Oparanya, a former governor of Kakamega, made the declaration during a church service in Nairobi on Sunday, August 11.
Oparanya pointed to his track record as governor, which he claims earned him his current position.
“You do know I am a servant. Those who come from Kakamega have seen the work that I have done there. That’s why these people have looked and seen that this old man can help with work. I will help them, but if I tell them to go in some direction and they refuse, I will quit and go back home,” Oparanya stated.
His remarks come amid growing concerns about youth unemployment in the country. Oparanya emphasized his dedication to addressing this issue, expressing his intent to provide tangible solutions. “I have seen the young people say that they don’t have businesses or jobs. Now I am here to ensure that they have something to do. That is my work,” he affirmed.
Oparanya also extended an open invitation to the public, particularly young people, to visit his office in Nairobi to seek assistance. “The young people and even the older generation are free to come to my office so that we can help each other,” he added.
The CS’s comments have sparked discussions about the effectiveness of the government’s approach to economic challenges and the role of senior officials in shaping policy. As Oparanya’s ultimatum looms, the government’s response remains to be seen.
