The Narok County Government has announced a complete ban on private vehicle usage for game drives within the protected area. This decision comes in response to a directive issued by the Chief Park Administrator on June 3rd, 2024, and is set to take immediate effect.

A press release from the Office of the Governor outlined several compelling factors that necessitated the implementation of this ban.

Foremost among these concerns were numerous reported incidents of misconduct by drivers and occupants of private vehicles, displaying a blatant disregard for reserve regulations.

“We have witnessed escalating cases of environmental degradation within the reserve premises, characterized by littering, noise pollution, and unauthorized gatherings, all contravening the stipulated reserve protocols,” the statement read.

In addition to these transgressions, the Narok County Government highlighted the persistent issue of private vehicles deviating from designated paths, creating unauthorized routes and exacerbating the risk of environmental damage. These off-road excursions have also frequently resulted in vehicular entrapment, necessitating extensive rescue operations that often extend into the deep of the night.

Quoting the press release, the County emphasized, “Sanctioned vehicles are accompanied by proficient guides, extensively trained in reserve protocols, ensuring safe and compliant exploration of the park.”
