The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) has issued a concerning announcement regarding significant water rationing across various parts of the city.
This measure is in response to a diminished water supply, a consequence attributed to the persistent heavy rains currently affecting the region.
Nahason Muguna, the Managing Director of NCWSC, outlined that the rationing plan will be implemented through the Equitable Water Distribution Program, ensuring that each customer receives water only once per week.
The scarcity is exacerbated by damage to supply pipelines caused by the heavy rains and subsequent floods, resulting in low water pressure in certain areas.
Affected neighbourhood’s include Fedha 1 estate, infinity estate on Kangundo Road, Tumaini estate, Tassia, Avenue park 1 and 2 Estates, Nyayo Embakasi Estate, Kware road area, Kwa ndege, Ngomongo, Korogocho, Matopeni-Kayoe, Brookside Grove Westlands, Wangapala and Iregi Roads-Parlands, Cotton Road, Dennis Pritt road, Chieko in Kasarani, Kamit Road near Jacarada, Kahawa Barracks, and Kenyatta University.
Muguna further highlighted that the city’s primary water sources, including Kikuyu Springs, Ruiru, Sasuma, and Thika Dams, are unable to meet the daily demand of 900 million litres, producing only 525.6 million litres per day.
The situation is compounded by Nairobi’s vulnerability to flooding, with recent government reports identifying the city as one of the worst-affected regions.
The forecast indicates continued moderate to heavy rainfall in various parts of Kenya, including coastal, Western, Lake Victoria basin, Central, Eastern, Rift Valley, and Kajiado counties, throughout the month.
