David Rudisha, the current world record holder in the 800 meters, has been appointed as a special ambassador for the upcoming World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, scheduled to take place from March 1 to March 3.
Despite avoiding indoor running to prevent potential injury, Rudisha recognized the significance of an indoor championship, especially in an Olympic year.
He stated that such championships would assist athletes in systematically preparing for the Olympics, which are undeniably the greatest sporting event on earth. The 2024 edition of the Olympics will be held in Paris.
The sports man competed during the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where secured a silver medal. “I am looking forward to going back to Glasgow for this major competition on our calendar.
”Sport is what has made me who I am today, and anything to do with sport makes me feel very happy. I am looking forward to meeting the fans and promoting the sport,” Rudisha told World Athletics.
He also urged Kenyan athletes participating in the championship to compete with pride and honour, in respect to the fallen world marathon record holder, Kevin Kiptum, who tragically passed away in a road accident.
Athletics Kenya this week, released the names of the participants to the March event. The pick of the team include Africa fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, who will be making his second appearance at the global championships after competing at the last edition in Belgrade, Serbia and competing at the 60m men’s race.
Youngstar Noah Kibet and Collins Kipruto for the 800mrace, Reynold Kipkorir and Vincent Kibet for the 1500m race and Vivian Chebet 800m Women. Teresiah Muthoni Gateri and Beatrice Chepkoech will compete in the 3000m Women race.
Kenya will also be represented in the men’s 4x400m relay where Boniface Mweresa, Zablon Ekwam, Kelvin Sane and Wiseman Were will be exchanging batons on the way to a podium place.
Being a legend in the 800m, Rudisha’s main focus will be on the race. “The 800 m, of course, is my favourite. I’m also looking forward to seeing the 400m, with the times they are posting already.
“Femke Bol, running 49 seconds in the early season indoors, is really amazing. We’re looking forward to watching these athletes do their best on the world indoor stage.”
More than 700 athletes from about 130 countries will take part in the World Indoor Championships,
