List of major highways Murkomen proposes to be tolled for revenue

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is advocating for the implementation of additional toll stations along prominent highways as a means to generate funds for the nationwide construction and refurbishment of roads.

Murkomen made this proposal on Friday while unveiling the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, highlighting specific roads such as Athi River-Namanga Road and Galleria-Rongai-Ngong-Karen Shopping Centre for consideration.

Other routes include Mombasa to Malaba roads, Corridor C and D roads (comprising Museum Hill-Moyale and Sirare-Lodwar, respectively), along with Kiambu Road, were highlighted in this endeavor. The CS emphasized the determination of the government to secure alternative funding sources for the enhancement of road networks nationwide.

According to his estimation, the government is expected to allocate an average of KES 700 million for the installation of new toll stations along major roads.

Additionally, he highlighted the government’s intention to capitalize on Public Private Partnerships and Climate Funding resources to fulfill the KeNHA strategic plan over the next four years.

The Director General of Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) Kung’u Ndung’u supported Murkomen’s proposal, affirming that the agency has identified a significant challenge related to the durability of major roads.

He emphasized the authority’s commitment to employing cutting-edge technology to address this issue and achieve its set objectives.
