The Affordable Housing initiative spearheaded by the National Government in Kakamega is progressing as scheduled, with the initial phase of 220 units currently achieving a 20% completion milestone.

The National Government Co-ordination Secretariat (NGCS), operating under the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, conducted an inspection of the KES 473 million construction at Milimani estate during their fact-finding mission in Kakamega. The objective of this initiative is to enhance government coordination for more efficient service delivery.

Polycarp Onyango, the Western Region Affordable Housing Lead, stated that the government aims to construct a minimum of 20,000 units in the county, including hostels for university students at various locations.

“This is just one of the projects; many more will emerge based on how fast we access land. If there are private partners interested in contributing land as equity shareholders, we are open to collaboration,” he noted.

According to Hebron Kibet, the site’s clerk of works, construction at the Milimani Affordable Housing complex, managed by Top Choice Surveillance Limited, began in September 2023. The project is expected to conclude by September 18 of the current year.

Kibet outlined that the housing complex consists of nine blocks, each hosting a four-story building. The development includes 40 three-bedroom units, 60 studios or bedsitter units, 100 two-bedroom units, and 20 one-bedroom units, along with an allocated parking area.

He revealed that the construction site currently employs over 108 workers, including four staff members, 29 skilled workers, and 75 unskilled laborers supporting the construction activities.

Polycarp Onyango further highlighted that the government also aims to construct 20,000 affordable housing units in Bungoma, 10,000 in Vihiga, and an additional 10,000 units in Busia.
