Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) announced on Friday that Kenya’s standard gauge railway (SGR) train experienced a significant increase of 13.9% in the third quarter of 2023, with passenger numbers reaching 701,132.

This marks an increase from 615,760 passengers during a comparable period in 2022. The rise in passenger figures can be attributed to a revival in economic activities.

In the first three months of 2023, the Chinese-built railway transported 597,506 passengers, followed by 652,299 passengers in the second quarter. This upward trajectory results in a total of 2.0 million passengers transported in the first nine months leading up to September, compared to 1.7 million recorded in a similar period last year.

Projections indicate that SGR passenger traffic is set to achieve a new peak this year, surpassing the 2.4 million recorded in 2022. Simultaneously, the SGR cargo train carried 1.7 million tonnes of cargo in the three-month period to September, up from 1.6 million tonnes during a similar period in 2022.

The SGR, a contemporary railway system constructed to replace the antiquated meter-gauge railway from the colonial era, links the port city of Mombasa to Nairobi and other hinterland towns. This efficient transportation network has significantly enhanced trade and commerce in the region.

The heightened demand for transportation services, as reflected in the increased passenger traffic, bodes well for the Kenyan economy. The SGR has effectively met this demand by providing a dependable and cost-effective means of transportation for the general population. The surge in passenger numbers underscores the success of the SGR project, fulfilling its commitment to delivering a modern and efficient railway system for the nation.

In summary, the escalating passenger traffic for the SGR signals a positive development for the Kenyan economy, indicative of a rising demand for transportation services. The SGR’s role in fortifying regional trade and commerce, coupled with its reliability and affordability, exemplifies the government’s dedication to advancing the country’s infrastructure.
