Four men connected to the theft of KES 94.9 million in cash from Wells Fargo employees on November 6 have been arrested in Nairobi, and KES 9.1 million believed to be part of the stolen money has been recovered, Kenyan authorities said Sunday.
The arrests were made by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters backed up by officers from the Nairobi region, according to a statement.
Ismael Patrick Gitonga, believed to be the driver who helped the Wells Fargo employees steal the money from the company truck in South C, Nairobi, was the first suspect detained in Rongai.
Investigators then went to Njiru in Kayole, where they found Gitonga’s Toyota Fielder being modified by Michael Matoro Njeru and Samuel Onyango. The two men were arrested and the car seized, the statement said.
Martin Nderi Ng’ang’a, the fourth suspect, was arrested near Thika Road Mall in Roysambu. At his rented home, also in Roysambu, detectives recovered KES 9.1 million,, which they believe to be part of the stolen money.
The cash box used to transport the money was found in a forest near Gataka Market in Karen after Ng’ang’a told police its location. Investigators think the forest was where the suspects met to divide the money before going into hiding.
“Investigations are ongoing,” the DCI statement said.
