Urgent call to address Kenya’s leadership vacuum in gender ministry

The Ministry of Gender, Culture, Arts, and Heritage has faced a prolonged leadership vacuum since July 2024, raising concerns over stalled progress on critical national issues. The Coalition Against Sexual Violence (CASV) has urged President William Ruto to appoint a competent Cabinet Secretary to steer the ministry forward.

The ministry has lacked a leader since Aisha Jumwa’s removal from office in mid-2024. Efforts to fill the position were blocked when the National Assembly rejected Stella Soi Lang’at’s nomination in August. The coalition highlights the ripple effects of this leadership void, particularly on marginalized communities and critical national priorities.

“This absence impedes Kenya’s commitments to international obligations, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” the coalition noted.

Key services, such as support for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), remain underfunded and uncoordinated, leaving vulnerable groups at risk. “Survivors are left with weakened access to justice and support services,” CASV stated, emphasizing that systemic inaction further entrenches inequalities.

The creative sector, a major contributor to Kenya’s cultural identity and economic growth, has also suffered. Without strategic guidance, initiatives aimed at bolstering social cohesion and preserving the nation’s heritage remain stalled. “Failing to appoint a leader perpetuates neglect and deprives Kenyans of transformative leadership,” CASV warned.

The coalition called on the government to prioritize gender disparities, curb GBV, and propel cultural development through effective leadership. “We demand the appointment of a visionary and experienced leader who can influence legislation, protect women and children, and nurture a safe, inclusive society,” CASV stated.

The organization urged civil society, cultural leaders, and the public to amplify their demand for immediate action, warning that further delays would jeopardize Kenya’s socio-economic and political progress.
