Road users in Nairobi are advised to prepare for a temporary traffic disruption along Uhuru Highway between January 16 and February 20, 2025, as construction work for a pedestrian underpass begins. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) issued a notice on January 9, informing the public about the impact on traffic flow at the Haile Selassie Roundabout.

KeNHA explained that the disruption is necessary for the construction of the pedestrian underpass, which will improve safety and ease pedestrian movement in the area. The planned construction work is set to start on Thursday, January 16, and is expected to be completed by Thursday, February 20, 2025.

A statement from KeNHA noted, “The Kenya National Highways Authority would like to inform the public of a temporary traffic disruption at Haile Selassie Roundabout on Uhuru Highway (A8) Road.” The authority further explained that the traffic disruption is a result of scheduled roadworks that are part of the larger project.

Motorists using the affected route have been urged to exercise patience during the construction period and follow the traffic management measures that will be implemented. “KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the statement added.

Due to the importance of the Haile Selassie Roundabout as a key junction for traffic flow between Uhuru Highway and Haile Selassie Avenue, the disruption is expected to significantly affect city traffic. Road users have been advised to observe caution during this time for their own safety and to ensure smoother movement.

The pedestrian underpass, which is expected to be the largest of its kind in the country, is designed with wide tunnels and well-planned entry and exit points. The project, which is projected to cost approximately KES 2 billion, aims to enhance both pedestrian and vehicle traffic flow in the area once completed.
