Team Kenya, fresh from its stellar performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, received a hero’s welcome upon its arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Tuesday evening.
The contingent, led by Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, included standout athletes Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet, who each clinched gold medals in their respective events.
Kenya’s athletes secured an impressive 11 medals at the Paris Games—four gold, two silver, and five bronze—positioning the nation at the top of the African medal table and 17th globally. This performance underscores Kenya’s dominance in athletics and sets the stage for even greater ambitions at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Speaking at JKIA, Murkomen praised the athletes for their dedication and success, acknowledging the significant role played by the government, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), and Athletics Kenya (AK) in supporting the team. He also announced that President William Ruto will host the victorious team at State House on Thursday morning.
“Our focus now shifts to Los Angeles 2028,” Murkomen said. “We need to build on this success, ensuring that our athletes are even better prepared to excel on the global stage.”
Faith Kipyegon, who secured gold in the 1500m and silver in the 5000m, expressed her gratitude to the government and supporting bodies for their unwavering support. “My biggest goal was to defend my country in the 1500m. It was emotional, but my coach and teammates kept me motivated,” Kipyegon shared.
Beatrice Chebet, who achieved double gold in the 5000m and 10000m, reflected on her Olympic debut with immense pride. “This was my first time at the Olympics, and I’m so happy to be a double gold medallist. I thank God, the government, NOCK, AK, my family, and everyone who supported me,” Chebet said.
