The Nairobi Railway City project aims to alleviate congestion and expand Nairobi’s Central Business District by creating a multifunctional urban development. This transformative venture will comprise a state-of-the-art central railway station, along with a range of mixed-use commercial complexes, hotels, and intermodal transportation facilities. With the project spanning three phases over a period of 20 years, its completion is set to bring about significant positive changes to the city.
The project’s intricate design phase is set to be completed by the end of 2023 and construction work targeted to commence in January 2024. The initial phase of the project will encompass the construction of the Central Railway Station and a business complex featuring two impressive 5,000-square-meter towers. Subsequent phases will include the establishment of an economic zone for high-tech firms and small to medium-sized businesses, as well as a residential complex incorporating a school, park, and housing units.

According to CS Murkomen, the Nairobi Railway City project will not only generate approximately 10,000 job opportunities, but it will also revitalize the area surrounding the Nairobi Central Station. Additionally, the project will contribute to the creation of a clean and environmentally friendly urban space, establish a comprehensive multi-modal transport system, and position Nairobi as a leading global city and commercial hub.
Expressing gratitude to the UK government for their support in the development of the project, Murkomen emphasized the importance of involving local architects, contractors, and young professionals in the design and execution phases. By integrating the skills and expertise of local talents, the project aims to stimulate economic growth, provide valuable experience to emerging graduates, and contribute to the overall prosperity of the community.

The successful completion of the project is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility within the Nairobi Metropolitan area. Furthermore, the Nairobi Commuter Rail network, an integral part of the development, will have the capacity to transport approximately 30,000 passengers during peak hours. To facilitate the realization of this grand undertaking, the UK government has pledged technical assistance and financing through UK Export Finance.
The Central Station and the entire development will be designed to minimize carbon emissions, optimize energy efficiency, and embrace climate resilience. Key features, such as flood protection measures and drought-resistant landscaping, will ensure the station’s resilience to the effects of climate change. Furthermore, the project will adhere to high environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, prioritizing social equity and environmental protection.
