National Traffic Commander Mary Omari has disclosed nine traffic measures ahead of the anticipated World Rally Championship in Naivasha and the Easter festivities.
In a statement released on Thursday, March 21, Omari declared that law enforcement officers would prioritize monitoring the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway during both events, with immediate prohibition of any form of overlapping on the route effective Friday, March 22.
This initiative, Omari explained, aims to facilitate a seamless flow of traffic, as the highway will accommodate both attendees of the rally and holidaymakers during Easter.
Additionally, she announced the prohibition of roadside parking along the highway, citing a prevalent issue among truck and lorry drivers, particularly in Kikopey, Gilgil in Nakuru County.
The rally event is scheduled to commence on Thursday, March 28, running through to March 30, while the Easter Festivities will span from Friday, March 29, to April 1.
Motorists intending to journey to Nyanza and Western Kenya during these events are advised to explore alternative routes due to anticipated heavy traffic on the highway.
“Motorists heading to Nyanza and Western are advised to use the Narok route after Mai Mahiu. Motorists headed to Nakuru from Central are advised to divert at Thika and proceed to the Safaricom Foundation route,” she advised.
In anticipation of heightened activities along the Nairobi-Naivasha route, the traffic commandant also revealed additional measures to ensure adequate police presence on the highway.
Aside from facilitating smooth traffic flow, law enforcement officers will rigorously enforce traffic regulations and ensure perpetrators face legal consequences.
Omari further announced the prohibition of roadside vendors from operating during the Safari Rally event, particularly in Naivasha, to prevent disruptions to traffic flow and ensure the safety of all road users.
Meanwhile, police will secure routes where spectators will gather to watch the rally, with various signages placed along roads to provide guidance to road users and spectators alike.
