Three officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) were apprehended by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in connection with their alleged involvement in the illegal gas plant explosion that occurred in Embakasi last week.

The DCI released a statement confirming that the owner of the gas plant also surrendered to the police and was subsequently arrested.

This arrest follows President William Ruto’s directive to apprehend government officials responsible for issuing licenses to the unauthorized gas plant.

Simultaneously, a manhunt has been initiated for two additional NEMA officials, two drivers, and the site manager of the Embakasi facility, who are reported to be evading law enforcement.

Authorities are actively seeking one of the drivers allegedly responsible for the truck believed to have engaged in illegal gas dumping at the plant.

Simultaneously, the teams from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), tasked with probing the tragic incident, have apprehended the primary suspect and three officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) who were found complicit.

The detained NEMA officials include the Director of Environment Compliance, the Head of Environmental Impact Assessment, and another official. The DCI is currently pursuing five additional suspects who remain at large and are wanted for their roles in the actions that resulted in significant physical and emotional distress for fellow

It is noteworthy that the arrests occurred shortly after NEMA suspended four of its employees in connection with the explosion. Among the suspended employees, three have already been apprehended. These individuals allegedly granted certificates of operation to the plant, situated in a densely populated area.

The tragic incident has claimed the lives of six Kenyans, with over 300 others currently receiving medical care in various Nairobi hospitals. Additionally, numerous homes and vehicles, collectively valued at millions, were destroyed during the explosion.

Reports suggest that the catastrophic event originated from a gas leak at the plant on the fateful evening, prompting residents to raise alarms. The explosion occurred seconds after two mechanics attempted to jumpstart a stalled car.
