Principal Secretaries in Kenya are in charge of running State Departments, according to Article 155(2) of the Constitution. They serve in various supervision capacities as the respective departments’ chief executives.
The most specialized tasks are carried out by Principal Secretaries on behalf of Cabinet Secretaries. In Kenya, it is the responsibility of the Principal Secretary to close all gaps in the extensive bureaucracies of the several ministries.
Duties and Responsibilities of Kenyan Principal Secretaries
- Putting the State Department’s Strategic Plan and governmental policies into action.
- Assisting in the accomplishment of the aims, objectives, and initiatives run by the government.
- Creating and putting into place an efficient performance management system.
- Ensuring the effective use of the State Department’s financial, personnel, and other departments. This includes producing monthly statutory reports.
- Encouraging the use of high standards of professional ethics in each department’s operations.

This position’s gross monthly salary is Ksh765,188. In addition to additional benefits decided upon by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
The President has the authority to select principal secretaries. The choice should be made following discussions with the deputy and other advisers. The ethnic and regional variety of Kenya is intended to be reflected in these appointments.
