The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has reported significant success with its Tax Amnesty Programme, with more than 500,000 taxpayers already reaping its benefits. Launched as part of the Finance Act of 2023, this initiative aimed to enhance tax compliance and provide relief to individuals faced with tax-related challenges.

Under the programme, taxpayers are afforded the opportunity to rectify their tax compliance status by settling overdue principal taxes. As of the latest update, the KRA revealed that participants have collectively settled KES 20.8 billion in overdue principal taxes.

Additionally, taxpayers have self-disclosed unpaid taxes amounting to KES 28.7 billion, a testament to the programme’s effectiveness in encouraging voluntary compliance.

One of the most notable aspects of the Tax Amnesty Programme is the waiver of penalties and interests for defaulting taxpayers. The KRA disclosed that it has waived a substantial sum of KES 244.7 billion in penalties and interests, providing much-needed relief to individuals burdened by accumulated charges.

Despite the programme’s success, the clock is ticking for taxpayers who have yet to participate. With the programme scheduled to conclude on June 30, 2024, the KRA is urging eligible individuals to take advantage of this opportunity before it expires. After the deadline, there will be no further amnesties, waivers, or write-offs on penalties and interests.

It’s important to note that the Tax Amnesty Programme pertains exclusively to overdue principal taxes accrued up to December 31, 2022. Furthermore, the initiative does not extend to customs and import duties, focusing solely on domestic tax obligations.

Beyond its immediate benefits to taxpayers, the programme serves broader objectives of enhancing revenue collection and fostering compliance. By incentivizing voluntary disclosure and settlement of tax liabilities, the KRA aims to strengthen the country’s fiscal framework and support crucial public services and infrastructure projects.

In light of the impending deadline, taxpayers are encouraged to act promptly and ensure compliance with their tax obligations. As the KRA emphasizes, the Tax Amnesty Programme aims to boost compliance and revenue collection while providing relief to taxpayers facing tax disputes
