The national government is in the process of finalising a policy designed to combat alcohol and drug abuse nationwide. The National Policy for the Prevention, Management, and Control of Alcohol, Drug, and Substance Abuse aims to offer a unified approach to tackle these issues, ensuring the welfare of Kenyans.

The draft policy emphasises the need to create a comprehensive strategy to address the negative impacts of substance abuse on individuals, families, and the country as a whole. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Nur underscored the significance of the policy.

“This policy will bolster government efforts to close loopholes in the regulation of alcohol, drugs, and substance abuse,” Nur said.

Nur highlighted recent progress in Mombasa, including the closure of 167 bars near sensitive areas like schools and religious centers. He also outlined ongoing efforts to combat the illegal alcohol trade, mentioning significant seizures of illicit substances.

Additionally, Nur underscored the importance of disrupting drug supply routes, particularly for marijuana originating from regions such as Kwale and Samburu. He expressed concern over the increasing consumption of miraa and mugoka, especially among youth, and called for targeted interventions to address this trend.

Furthermore, Nur announced enhanced law enforcement operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and enhancing community safety. He emphasised the necessity of allocating resources effectively, particularly for rehabilitation programs in coastal regions.
