Agriculture and Livestock CS, Mithika Linturi, has stated that small-scale farming can help control the high cost of living in Kenya. He noted that if more Kenyans engage in small-scale farming, the country’s dependence on imported food will decrease, reducing food prices and hence the cost of living.
The CS emphasized that the government will encourage small-scale farming by providing farmers with adequate resources, including affordable credit, fertilizer, and high-quality seeds. He also suggested that the government will provide farmers with extension services to ensure that they can access relevant information and skills to increase crop yields.
According to Linturi, farmers should be encouraged to embrace modern farming techniques and technologies such as greenhouse farming and irrigation to boost their yields. He also urged the government to invest in food processing and storage facilities to ensure that farmers do not lose their produce due to lack of storage facilities.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that small-scale farming has the potential to create employment opportunities, particularly for youth, who can engage in agribusiness by providing various services such as packaging and transportation of farm produce. He added that by adopting small-scale farming, Kenyans can achieve food security, reduce the cost of living, and boost the country’s economy.
The CS reiterated that promoting small-scale farming could be an effective way to tackle the high cost of living in Kenya, while also addressing food security and providing employment opportunities for the youth.
