Manchester United appeared to be heading for a 2-0 win at Old Trafford thanks to Marcel Sabitzer’s first half double before own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire saw Sevilla peg the Premier League side back in a dramatic ending at Old Trafford.
United looked to be coasting to a quarter-final first-leg victory before Sevilla came back into the contest and profited from a terrible ending to the game for Erik ten Hag’s men.
First Tyrell Malacia diverted the ball past David de Gea after former Manchester City man Jesus Navas had pulled a low cross back from the goal line.
Then, two minutes into injury time, Youssef En-Nesyri’s off-target header struck Harry Maguire to leave De Gea helpless as it flew into the net.
The score line is bad enough as it leaves United facing a battle to secure the semi-final spot they seemed to have virtually sealed.
Elsewhere Juventus beat Sporting Lisbon 1-0, while Bayer Leverkusen drew 1-1 with Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.
Defender Federico Gatti scored the winner for Juventus as he reacted quickest to poke home from a yard out after Dusan Vlahovic’s header was blocked on the line.
Juventus have now kept four consecutive clean sheets in the Europa League and know another in Lisbon next Thursday would set up a semi-final tie against Manchester United or Sevilla, who drew 2-2.
However, goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny left the pitch in tears after 44 minutes, complaining about chest palpitations.
At De Kuip, Feyenoord secured a narrow 1-0 win against Jose Mourinho’s side. Mats Wieferr grabbed the only goal of the game on 53 minutes. Roma will rue Lorenzo Pellegrini’s first-half penalty miss and also the loss of Paulo Dybala and Tammy Abraham to injury.
