Safaricom, YouTube Partner To Promote Content Creation

By providing affordable packages for its users, Safaricom and Google have inked a partnership to promote and expand Short Video content (YouTube shorts) on YouTube.

Safaricom users can purchase 1GB data bundles for as little as Ksh10 during the two-month campaign to browse and upload material to their YouTube accounts.

“I believe this new data bundle offer will help in uplifting new talent by giving them more opportunities to showcase their skills and talents and get recognition at both local and international levels,” Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Ndegwa added.

The campaign will run simultaneously with the competition dubbed the YouTube Shorts Challenge under the hashtag #Safaricomshortschallenge, in which participants can enter to win weekly cash prizes and a grand cash prize by creating and uploading an original YouTube Shorts Video in any category (Comedy, Dance, How To, Food & Culture, Lifestyle, Fitness, Farming, Technology, Arts & Crafts, etc.).

15 content creators will be recognized each week with cash prizes ranging from Ksh5,000 to Ksh120,000. Ten content creators will each receive a large monetary award.

At the end of the campaign, the content creator with the highest ranking and the most likes and views will get KES 1.2 million. The victors in the second and third places will receive Ksh800,000 and Ksh600,000, respectively.

As of July 2021, Over 30 billion views per day were being made on videos via the Shorts player which allows users to watch YouTube’s short videos from anywhere in the world. Since its September 2020 premiere, YouTube Shorts has accrued over 1.5 billion monthly subscribers.

Customers are required to dial *544*55# to purchase the daily Ksh10 for 1GB Data bundles for the YouTube shorts challenge.
