Safaricom Ethiopia Switches On Network In 5 more Cities

Safaricom Ethiopia has launched its network and services in the city of Hawassa. The company also recently expanded its services to the cities of Assela, Jigjiga, Sodo, and Dilla.

New users in these cities will be able to select their chosen numbers, buy airtime, and access dedicated customer support at the Safaricom Ethiopia-branded stores in their respective locations. SIM cards cost 30 birr.

“We are excited to expand our coverage into Hawassa, Assela, Jigjiga, Sodo, and Dilla with more cities set to join the growing Safaricom Ethiopia family. We are also delighted to have expanded our services into more regional states,” said Anwar Soussa, CEO, Safaricom Ethiopia.

Customers who sign up for the “07” network are given a welcome package (Gursha) that includes 700 MB of data, 35 minutes of phone calls within the “07” network, and an additional 35 minutes of voice calls across all networks. This package is valid for 30 days. Customers who purchase airtime and voice packages also receive Gursha incentive in addition to the welcome gift.

Safaricom Ethiopia now has a network presence in 21 cities across the nation, including Dire Dawa, Harar, Haramaya, Adama, Bahir Dar, Bishoftu, Mojo, Debre Birhan, Awoday, Gondar, Addis Abeba, Sebeta, Dessie, Kombolcha, Jimma, Shashemene, Dilla, Sodo, Jigjiga, Assela, and Hawassa.

Safaricom Ethiopia is educating consumers about its goods and services through Below-The-Line (BTL) activations in all 21 cities, including universities, open markets, distributor shops, and roadshows, in keeping with the network growth. When customers purchase a SIM card, airtime, and all network packages, they are also rewarded with Gursha packages.

Safaricom registered its first revenue from its Ethiopia operations in its first reporting cycle since the launch of its commercial operations.

Safaricom Ethiopia Service Revenue for the period ended September 30th, 2022 was  Ksh9.1 million while total revenue including handsets sales was Ksh98.3 million.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa noted that Safaricom had invested over USD 598 million in Ethiopia operations and was encouraged by the early uptake of its services, great customer feedback on the quality of their data experience, and the revenue contribution by the Ethiopia unit.

The Government of Ethiopia also committed to awarding Safaricom with a mobile money license which will boost commercial efforts, with a greater focus on driving financial inclusion and digital acceleration for the people of Ethiopia.
