Retired Kenyan intelligence officers back NIS against political criticism

The Association of Retired Intelligence Officers of Kenya (AKRIO) has voiced strong support for the National Intelligence Service (NIS) amidst what it calls an “unwarranted onslaught” by certain media outlets and politicians. In a press release dated January 15, 2025, the retired officers urged restraint in public discourse surrounding the NIS, emphasizing the critical role the agency plays in safeguarding the country.

“We call upon all citizens of goodwill to support the service as it discharges its mandate in protecting the country against internal and external threats,” the statement read. The group expressed concern that recent accusations risk undermining the morale and effectiveness of the NIS during a pivotal time in Kenya’s history.

The retired officers commended the NIS for its professionalism and called for an end to what they described as “personalized attacks on the person of the DG, NIS.” AKRIO emphasized that the intelligence agency’s work is crucial to Kenya’s national interests and urged its officers to remain focused on their duties despite the challenges.

“We urge and encourage the Service officers to continue working diligently without fear in preserving the security of our country,” the statement continued, noting the importance of maintaining operational integrity.

AKRIO also called on social media users and political leaders to avoid politicizing security matters. The group reminded the public that the NIS operates under significant pressures and should be allowed to carry out its work without undue interference or baseless allegations.
