The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) has announced the appointment of Rose Mkalama as the Acting Chief Executive Officer, effective from October 5, 2023.
Mkalama assumes this role following the annual and terminal leave of CPA. Peter Mbugua, whose tenure as CEO will conclude on December 20, 2023. He has held the position of CEO at REREC since 2017.

The decision to appoint Mkalama was made in consultation with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, and has received the full support of the REREC Board. Chairman Godfrey Lemiso expressed confidence in the new acting CEO’s ability to lead the Corporation as it embarks on the implementation of its new strategic plan.
Mkalama brings a wealth of qualifications and experience to her new role. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Administration, specializing in Strategic Management and Performance. Additionally, she possesses a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Master of Law in Oil and Gas. Her educational background is complemented by a Bachelor’s Degree in Law. She is also a Certified Public Secretary and a member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the Institute of Certified Secretaries (ICS).
Mkalama has a longstanding association with REREC, having served within the organization for over 15 years in various senior management capacities. Her roles have included serving as a Company Secretary, General Manager of Corporate Services, and General Manager of Information, Education, and Communication.

The Chief Executive Officer’s position is expected to be filled through a competitive selection process.
The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), formerly known as the Rural Electrification Authority, was established under Section 66 of the Energy Act, 2006. Its mandate is to spearhead Kenya’s green energy drive and implement rural electrification projects.
