President William Ruto and Chief Justice Martha Koome are presently engaged in a meeting at State House in Nairobi. This gathering stems from public statements made by both individuals, expressing their readiness to address and resolve the existing tensions between the judiciary and the executive branches.
During a media briefing held by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on January 15, Chief Justice Koome disclosed that the commission had extended an invitation to President Ruto for a meeting aimed at deliberating on any concerns or issues affecting the judicial arm of the government.
On January 16, the president embraced the Judiciary’s invitation for discussions, emphasizing the importance of including the leadership from all three branches of government in the dialogue.
Previously, Ruto had launched a campaign against the Koome-led judiciary, alleging that it is undermining his government’s agenda. He has pledged to defy court orders that he perceives as stemming from ‘judicial impunity.’
Koome later criticized these actions, stating that the threats and declarations are highly significant and represent a severe assault on the Constitution, the rule of law, and the overall stability of the nation.
