President Ruto Directs Domiciling Of Junior Secondary In Primary Schools

Primary school grade 6 learners who sat for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) in 20202 will not proceed to secondary school institutions for junior secondary school.

This is after President William Ruto ordered the domiciling of the learners in their current primary schools after he received an interim report from the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform on Thursday.

According to a statement released by the Office of the President, the ministry of education will offer guidance on how the order will be effected.

In the meantime, the learning of grades 6, 7 and 8 will be used as the experiment to monitor the learning progress of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and offer insights into areas that need improvement.

The president added that more infrastructure, such as the laboratory and classrooms, will be constructed within the primary school institutions to support the learning of junior secondary school.

“The construction of laboratories will be given priority within the next one year. Members of Parliament are asked to work towards providing support for the extra facilities. Meanwhile, primary schools neighboring secondary schools will share the laboratories and other facilities with junior secondary schools,” said the president.

Ruto also directed the ministry of education, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and the Teachers Service Commission to work on ensuring the teachers are well-equipped to dispense what is needed under the CBC.

“The Ministry of Education, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and the Teachers Service Commission will work on modalities of fast-tracking retooling teachers to ensure the country has sufficient numbers who are compliant with CBC,” he said.

He also announced that the government is in the race to enlist more than 30 000 teachers in January 2023 to deal with the biting shortage of teachers.
