The National Police Service (NPS) has canceled a scheduled Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Lari Nyakinywa Women’s Group in Nakuru County over concerns of a potential clash with settlers on disputed land.
The meeting, which was originally scheduled for January 29, 2025, in Gilgil Constituency, Nakuru County, was initially cleared by law enforcement. However, police later received intelligence suggesting that a confrontation was imminent, prompting the cancellation.
In an official press statement issued on January 29, 2025, the Inspector General of Police’s office stated:
“We later received intelligence that the current settlers on the land were going to clash with the group. Consequently, the meeting was cancelled on security grounds.”
Despite being informed of the cancellation, some members of the women’s group attempted to proceed with the meeting. This led to police intervention at Gilgil Junction, where officers intercepted the group to prevent further escalation.
“The intelligence we received yesterday revealed that the group had mobilized themselves to proceed with the meeting, which prompted us to take necessary action to prevent them from traveling to Gilgil. The group, however, defied the police advice and they have been intercepted by police at Gilgil Junction,” the statement further noted.
The Regional Police Commander of Rift Valley is currently engaged in discussions with group members at the scene, seeking an amicable resolution. Meanwhile, the police have urged the women’s group to comply with security directives and disperse peacefully as government agencies work towards resolving the underlying land dispute.
“As a Service, we remain committed to our mandate of maintaining law and order,” the police emphasized.
