Petitioner challenges NTSA director’s tenure extension withdrawal

A man previously contesting the renewal of George Njao’s term as the Director General of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) now claims ignorance regarding the dismissal of the case.

Edwin Were informed Employment and Labour Relations Judge Byrum Ongaya that he did not provide consent for the settlement order, allegedly adopted by the court in January of the previous year.

Were seeks to reinstate the matter, arguing that the court’s adoption of the consent was unauthorized. He asserts that the recorded consent impedes the transparent filling of the NTSA DG position through a competitive process.

Responding swiftly, the NTSA board, represented by Advocate Charles Agwara, clarified to the court that the adoption of the consent indicated the resolution of the matter, rendering further court involvement unnecessary.

However, Judge Byrum scheduled a hearing for March 12 to allow time for filing necessary documentation for the current application before the court. Additionally, the judge directed that Okoth & Company Advocates, the law firm responsible for drafting the consent, be served with the application.

Notably, Were initiated legal proceedings in January of the previous year, aiming to prevent the renewal of Njao’s term, which ended in October 2022.

Njao, initially appointed for a three-year term in 2019, reportedly sought an additional three-year extension. Therefore, Were sought to block NTSA and Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen from considering Njao’s extension application.
