Outgoing Governors, Deputies To Earn Over Ksh1.3Billion Send Off Package

Following the recent elections, that resulted in the replacement of 37 county heads, departing governors and their deputies will receive sendoff packages worth more than Ksh1.3 billion.

In the general elections on August 9, 2022, voters ousted 16 governors, while 21 did not run for re-election after serving their second and final terms.

For each year of service, each exiting governor is entitled to a gratuity equal to 31% of their yearly basic salary. According to a circular from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), governors received a basic monthly wage of Ksh924,000, while their deputies took home Ksh621,250.

Accordingly, for the five years they served, taxpayers would pay each county leader Ksh17.2 million in gratuity, or 31% of their annual base pay, while their subordinates will keep Ksh11.55 million.

The 21 retiring county executives will receive Ksh721.83 million, while the 16 one-term governors will receive a total of Ksh275.2 million. The sum now equals Ksh997.03 million.

Under the 16 county leaders, deputy governors would be paid a total of Ksh77.28 million, while those who worked for the 21 governors will be paid a total of Ksh201.6 million.

In addition to the monthly payouts, they are asking for a lump sum payment equal to their annual salary, a 3,000cc four-wheel-drive automobile, fuel reimbursement, a driver, a personal assistant, and medical insurance for both domestic and international treatment.

According to the benefits provided to retiring presidents, vice presidents, chief justices, and parliamentary speakers, governors and their deputies are requesting a lifelong monthly pension of Ksh739,200 and Ksh700,000, respectively.
