Omtatah to Ruto: Provide evidence or apologize to judiciary

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah on Friday implored President William Ruto to utilize intelligence resources to uncover corruption within the judiciary, after Ruto accused judges of taking bribes.

In a series of tweets, Omtatah said the president’s allegations against the judiciary were “grave and pose a threat to judicial independence.” He added that if Ruto had concrete evidence of bribery, he would have provided it to the Director of Public Prosecutions or Directorate of Criminal Investigations for action.

“Let the truth come to light,” Omtatah tweeted.

The senator warned Ruto against following a “destructive path reminiscent of the turmoil during the 2007/2008 post-election violence when confidence in the judiciary was severely eroded.” He urged Ruto to apologize to the judiciary and “seek forgiveness from the diligent, public-spirited Kenyans & institutions that have challenged his pet projects in court.”

Omtatah also referenced Ruto’s assertion that he would flout court orders, tweeting that Ruto “cannot afford to be intoxicated by power and behave recklessly.”

In his final tweet, Omtatah characterized Ruto’s attack on the judiciary as an attempt to shift blame and warned that “any attempt to govern this country outside the boundaries of the law will face staunch resistance.”

“The President should not underestimate this,” Omtatah tweeted. “Regardless of the circumstances, the serpent’s eggs will not be allowed to hatch.”
