NTSA initiates procurement for driver testing simulation equipment

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced plans to acquire six sets of driver-testing simulation equipment, marking a significant step towards enhancing road safety.

This decision, revealed in a tender notice, signifies NTSA’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved driver assessment and training.

Funded in part by the World Bank under the Horn of Africa Gateway Project, the procurement aims to enhance the capabilities of the driver testing center in Thika. NTSA clarified that the utilization of these funds underscores the government’s dedication to advancing road safety measures.

The solicitation, open to eligible bidders, encompasses the supply, delivery, installation, commissioning, and testing of the simulation equipment. NTSA emphasized its role as the implementing agent for the project, aligning with its mandate under the Ministry of Roads and Transport.

Driver testing simulation technology offers an immersive experience, simulating real-life driving scenarios to enhance driver training and evaluation. With the capacity to generate over 500 scenarios, instructors can assess drivers’ reactions to various situations, thereby improving their skills and promoting safer driving practices.

This initiative aligns with global trends, as countries like Singapore and the Netherlands have successfully integrated simulation technology into their driver testing protocols. NTSA underscored its commitment to leveraging technology to streamline the testing process, aiming to standardize assessments and minimize human involvement.

In its draft National Road Safety Action Plan 2023-2027, NTSA emphasized the pivotal role of technology in ensuring rigorous driver assessments. By gradually automating driver testing, NTSA aims to enhance efficiency and accuracy while maintaining stringent licensing standards.

Through the adoption of driver testing simulation equipment, NTSA is poised to revolutionize driver assessment practices, ultimately contributing to safer roads and improved road safety outcomes.
