No More Evening Classes And Morning Preps For Students-CS Machogu

Students will nolonger report to class before the break of dawn, according to education CS Ezekiel Machogu. They will also be required to finish schoolwork before dusk.

“Classes should start at 8.00 am and end exactly at 3.45 pm,” the CS stated, adding that students sometimes wake up at 4 am to prepare for school

The CS complained that teachers were giving their students too much work and not giving them enough time to rest.

“Let’s not subject our children to a lot of stress which affects their mental health. We want to make learning fun and likeable. Our children should rest and have enough sleep. Let children be children and enjoy their schooling life,” Machogu added.

Speaking at Nairobi Primary Junior Secondary School on Monday January 30,2023 the CS directed school heads to ensure learning takes place within stipulated timelines.

At the same time, the CS stated that the government is examining the courses that Junior Secondary School students will study.

With the current system, students are only permitted to select a total of two optional subjects from a list of 12 approved by the government.

These include; Math, English, Kiswahili, Agriculture, Integrated Science, Health Education, Social Studies, and Religious Education(Christian, Islamic, Hindu).

Others include business studies, life skills, sports, and physical education in addition to pre-technical and pre-career education.

Additionally, students are required to complete a minimum of one and a maximum of two optional courses from the following categories: virtual arts, performing arts, home science, computer science, foreign language (French, German, Arabic), indigenous language, or sign language.

Other Changes Introduced In The Education Sector Include;

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced on Monday, January 16, 2023, that there will be no fees for children enrolling in Junior Secondary Schools.

According to the CS, President William Ruto asked Treasury to make up Ksh15,000 per learner for capitation to facilitate free learning in all Junior Secondary Schools.

Machogu mandated that parents only pay for uniforms which will be changed in Junior Secondary Schools. Junior Secondary pupils will wear different uniforms than lower primary kids, according to education CS Ezekiel Machogu.

speaking at the Kenya Institute for Curriculum Development on Monday, January 16, 2023, at the announcement of Form One placement, the CS said that the directive was one of the forms that had been created by President William Ruto.

The CS clarified that the Board of Management (BoMs) will be responsible for making the ultimate decision regarding the kind of school uniforms Junior Secondary students will wear.
