The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has rolled out a new digital speed notification system aimed at improving road safety by alerting motorists who exceed speed limits. This initiative, which is currently in its pilot phase, seeks to promote responsible driving and reduce overspeeding incidents across Kenya.

On November 27, several drivers took to social media to share their experiences after receiving instant SMS alerts from the NTSA. The notifications, which are triggered shortly after a motorist exceeds the speed limit, provide real-time information on the violation, including the vehicle’s registration number, the time of the offense, the speed exceeded, and the name of the registered vehicle owner.

One motorist described their experience: “I was driving down Red Hill Road when I suddenly received an SMS from NTSA. It caught me off guard,” they said. Another driver, who received an alert after passing the Southern Bypass, added, “The alert came right after I passed the Southern Bypass. It made me more conscious of my speed.”

The SMS notifications include key details such as: “Your vehicle Reg X was captured driving at a speed of 54kph exceeding the speed limit of 50kph on Red Hill Road on 2024-11-27 at 10:39:17. Slow down, fika salama.”

The NTSA explained that this system is part of a broader strategy to incorporate technology into traffic management, with the aim of fostering safer driving habits. The agency believes the real-time alerts can significantly reduce instances of speeding and promote safer driving across the country.

Traffic safety experts have applauded the initiative, highlighting its potential to deter reckless driving and prevent accidents. However, some motorists have expressed concerns about the frequency of the alerts and the system’s accuracy. In response, the NTSA has assured the public that the program will be monitored and adjusted based on feedback.
