The Nairobi County government has issued a warning to business owners, cautioning them against fraudsters posing as county environment officers. These imposters have been targeting Nairobi’s businesses, claiming to enforce noise pollution regulations while demanding bribes to avoid supposed penalties.
Geoffrey Mosiria, Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Environment, highlighted the severity of the issue, stating that business owners have been swindled out of significant sums, with some cases reaching hundreds of thousands of shillings. “This is the last warning to all imposters who harass business owners by impersonating Nairobi County Government environment officers,” he asserted.
Mosiria clarified that authentic county officers strictly adhere to legal protocols when handling noise pollution violations. “As the Nairobi County Government, under Governor Johnson Sakaja’s leadership, we do not accept bribes. This is a clean government, the cleanest government around,” he emphasized.
The county official advised business owners who have fallen victim to report such incidents to the police. “Our work is not to frustrate your business or take your money,” Mosiria reassured, underlining the government’s commitment to supporting businesses and combating fraud.
To prevent future incidents, Mosiria noted that genuine county environment officers are always accompanied by law enforcement and representatives from agencies such as the Liquor and Licensing Board and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) during official operations.
He also urged business owners to review any available CCTV footage to assist in identifying these imposters. Furthermore, Mosiria reminded establishments like pubs, restaurants, and churches to comply with noise regulations, especially during national exam periods when minimal disturbance is essential.
