The African Development Bank’s Civil Society and Community Engagement Division recently announced plans to hold the Regional Civil Society Forum for East Africa in Nairobi.

The event is set for October 18-19 and is one in a series of regional forums with the theme “Engaging Civil Society in Mobilizing Private Sector Financing for Climate and Green Growth in Africa” to be held in 2023, alternating with a continental conference held every other year.

This regional format exemplifies the African Development Bank’s dedication to enhancing its presence and interaction with regional communities, encouraging greater civil society involvement in development initiatives and championing the continent’s climate and green growth objectives.

The forum, supported by the Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation Trust Fund, will bring together professionals and leaders from civil society, government and the local business community to share best practices and discuss potential for attracting private sector funding in the area. This comes as Kenya recorded an increased number of private sector dealings in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period last year.

The event will be held in a hybrid format and broadcast live via a link to be announced shortly, the bank said. This will give participants a chance to debate potential and challenges for fostering the transition to an environmentally friendly and climate-resilient economy in East Africa.

The forum comes after the inaugural Africa Climate Summit and 5th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, high-level summits spearheaded by the African Union and held in Nairobi. Those regional events brought together more than a dozen African presidents and professionals and activists. Holding more regional and continental forums in Nairobi signifies the city’s growing importance as a regional and continental hub, underscoring its political, economic and cultural significance in Africa.
