Victor Munyaka, former Member of Parliament for Machakos Town Constituency, has turned down an appointment by Kenyan President William Ruto to chair the Kenya Animal Genetic Resource Centre (KAGRC), citing concerns over the current political climate.

In a statement released on October 6, 2024, Munyaka acknowledged his appointment through a Kenya Gazette notice dated October 3, 2024, but said he had made “the difficult decision to respectfully decline this appointment” after “soul-searching” and “extensive consultations”.

“In consideration of the current political climate that threatens the realization of the government’s economic transformation agenda, I have made the difficult decision to respectfully decline this appointment,” Munyaka stated.

The decision comes approximately three weeks after Munyaka publicly criticised President Ruto for allegedly sidelining the Kamba community in state appointments. In his earlier statement, Munyaka had said, “I have stood with Ruto for over 10 years. We (Kamba) gave Ruto 250,000 votes and that is what won him the presidency. For the sake of Munyaka and those who delivered your victory, don’t forget the Kamba community.”

The former MP had been a long-time supporter of President Ruto, making his decision to decline the appointment particularly notable.

In his statement, Munyaka expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity, saying, “I thank the Head of State for offering me the opportunity to serve Kenyans in such a capacity.” He concluded by wishing the administration success in leading the country.
